Senior Research Associate in Computing and Sustainability

We are seeking a Senior Research Associate to lead the software development of a new platform that will quantify and assess the environmental impacts of the world food system. You will be writing software and be using this to do independent research, and research in conjunction with other team members. We are forming a new joint programme between Oxford University and WWF that will build a global database and platform for research on the environmental impacts of agriculture. This will be a novel open-access web-based database that will be a repository for Life Cycle Assessment data from researchers and farmers. You will be supported by a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher with a focus on sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment research.

You will contribute independently and significantly to the research program around the use of the platform in sustainability science. You will have full responsibility for planning, designing, researching, directing and implementing the platform. You will raise research funds by contributing to ongoing fundraising and grant-writing for development of the platform, and to explore novel sources of funding for individual research. You will write and assist with research articles for top-tier peer-reviewed journals. You will also lead on the design, coding, testing and documentation of a web-based database and platform. As part of your role, you will manage the operational activities of software development, organising resources and attending project meetings.

The successful candidate must hold or be close to completion of a PhD/DPhil in a relevant subject or have equivalent substantive research experience outside academia. You will be a research-led scientist and programmer with extensive experience designing and delivering computational databases and decision support tools. You must have demonstrable knowledge of design patterns and best practices in software development and strong publication record as appropriate to field of expertise. You will have the ability to independently plan and manage a research project, including a research budget.

This position is fixed-term for 24 months in the first instance.
